Eight breaks, one reef
Eight breaks, all within reach of the villa. T-Land, Squealers, the Sandbank and the Bombie are visible from the wall itself; Suckie Mamas and Bo'a are a short boat ride or drive away; Dana and D'oa take a little more planning, but reward it.
Which one works depends entirely on the tide. T-Land holds a ride on almost any tide, while the Sandbank only wakes up when the water drops, and Squealers wants it mid to high. Between the eight of them, there is very rarely a day with nothing breaking.
Rote island is packed full of amazing surf spots beyond these eight, and the ones that don't have names yet are usually the best-kept secrets. Ask us on arrival and we'll point you the right way, tide chart in hand.
T-Land
A reef point break and one of the longest left-handers in the archipelago. A relatively gentle take-off and a reliable ride.
Squealers
Right in front of the villa. A short left shoulder and a longer right; waves reform on the inside.
The Sandbank
In view from the wall, alongside T-Land, Squealers and the Bombie.
The Bombie
The fourth of the four spots the villa looks over.
Suckie Mamas
A right-hander a few minutes boat ride from WaveHaven.
Bo'a
A right-hander a short drive from the villa, and the go-to when the swell wants a change of direction from the point.
Dana
Further out by boat, off the small island of the same name. Worth the trip on the right day, and usually empty.
D'oa
Another reef pass along the coast, less visited than the spots in front of the villa. Ask us about the tide before heading out.
When to come
Dry season · April – October. Peak swell · June – September. The dry season runs from April to October, with the biggest and most consistent swells arriving between June and September. Rote sits where the Indian Ocean meets the Pacific, so there is usually a wave working somewhere on the island regardless of the time of year — the tide decides which one.
