More than one wave
Wingfoiling, kitesurfing, windsurfing and island days. From April to November the trade winds make Rote as good for wind sports as it is for surf.
Wind and flat water
The offshore trade winds keep the surf smooth and create flat water inside the reef.
- Bring
- Small sails and kites. The wind is regularly between 18 and 30 knots.
- Tide
- Low tide gets shallow in the lagoon; from mid to high tide there is enough water for a 75 cm mast.
- Gear
- Bring your own gear; there is large storage at the villa.
Wingfoiling in front of the house
About 200 metres out in front of WaveHaven, the offshore wind creates smooth, flat water for beginners to expert foilers. Most people ride a 4 or 5 m² wing; on the windiest days a 3 m² is enough. Go from mid to high tide.
Foiling RoteKiting at Loedi beach
Loedi (kite) beach is the local kite spot. Low to mid tide gives very smooth water, and the wind blows consistently through the dry season.
Windsurfing, bump & jump to waves
Loedi beach offers side-on bump-and-jump freeride conditions. Jason Polakow once windsurfed T-Land and found tricky wind but perfect waves. T-Land is for expert windsurfers only and generally not windsurf-friendly, so choose one of the other spots where you won’t interfere with surfers.
SUP, tow foiling and Foildrive
Rote suits every foil sport: tow foiling, SUP foil, Foildrive and prone. SUP foilers can paddle to the Bombie in about 10 minutes.

Island days
When the wind or swell takes a break: Nemberala beach, waterfalls, turquoise lagoons for kayaking and SUP, and traditional Rote villages. The reefs around the island are good for snorkelling and diving, with colourful fish, turtles and sometimes dolphins.

Can I windsurf at T-Land?
Only if you are an expert, and it is generally not windsurf-friendly. There are other spots nearby where you won’t interfere with surfers.
Can I rent wind or foil gear?
Bring your own. There is large storage at the villa for boards, foils, wings and sails.
